Lugged Steel

Bringing a 1980s steel road frame back, one seized bolt at a time.

About

In a one-car garage with a workbench made from two sawhorses and a door, I am slowly bringing a steel road bicycle from the mid-1980s back to the road. It came to me with a seized seatpost, rusted chrome, flat tires that had fused to the rims, and a frame that was clearly worth the trouble. I am not a mechanic. I have a set of cone wrenches, a repair stand bought secondhand, and the patience to look things up.

These pages record what I did, in what order, what it took, and what I broke along the way. The goal is a bicycle I ride on Sundays, not a museum piece. Where the old part can be saved, it is saved; where it cannot, I write down why.
